Daniel Templon, established in 1966, is known for exhibiting and promoting a major roaster of contemporary European and American artists, that has established him as one of the leading French dealers of his generation. The first gallery was opened rue de Seine on the left bank in 1966, but in 1972 the gallery moved to its current location, rue Beaubourg, only a couple of blocks away from the Centre Georges Pompidou.
Daniel Templon first established his reputation by showing avant-garde French artists (Ben, Boltanski, Journiac, Rancillac, Raynaud, Le Gac, Kirili among others), conceptual artists (Kossuth, Art &Language) and minimalist artists (Carl Andre, Sol Lewitt, Dan Flavin, Donald Judd). The seventies were largely devoted to the promotion of American artists who were still relatively unknown in Europe: Frank Stella, Wilhem de Kooning, Serra, Warhol…Throughout his career, Daniel Templon has always kept strong ties to the United States. Over the years, he has exhibited and promoted each new generation of American artists : Schnabel, Haring, Basquiat, Longo, Morley, Fischl, Bleckner etc. He recently introduced his Parisian audience to Bruce Nauman’s videos as well as new photographic works by Mike Kelley, Clay Ketter and Gregory Crewdson.
Daniel Templon is also an active supporter of French painting and a spokesperson for the promotion of contemporary art in France. He has exhibited many of the key figures of contemporary French creation regardless of the schools or movements: Daniel Buren, César, Arman, Raymond Hains, Gérard Garouste, Philippe Cognée. One of his most internationally known artists, Jean-Marc Bustamante will represent France at the 2003 Venice Biennial.
