Since its foundation in 1968 the Galleria dello Scudo has devoted its activity to showing modern and contemporary art, above all that of the finest Italian artists from the first half of the Twentieth century. It organized with public bodies rigorous and highly researched shows of great importance which, owing to their striking approach, have had great critical and popular success. Amongst the most historically important have been "de Chirico, gli anni Venti" ("de Chirico in the Twenties"), 1986-87, then transferred to Palazzo Reale in Milan; an in-depth enquiry into the Parisian years of Alberto Savinio (1990-91); and "Marino Marini – Mitografia" ("Marino Marini – Mythography"), 1994-95, which analysed the evolution of the most characteristic aspect of the artist's output; "Morandi ultimo – nature morte 1950-1964" ("The Later Morandi – Still Lifes 1950-1964") in the winter 1997-98, then transferred to the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, and "de Chirico, gli anni Trenta" ("de Chirico in the Thirties"), in the season 1998-99.
The Galleria dello Scudo also continues to present the most important Italian artists working since 1950 amongst whom are Afro, Burri, Capogrossi, Fontana, Manzoni, Melotti, Novelli and Scialoja. The Gallery has recently dedicated a show to the work of Eliseo Mattiacci, recently commissioned to realize an installation for the sculptures park at the University UCLA in Los Angeles.
