Galleria Lawrence Rubin was founded in Milan in 1997 by James Rubin and Christian Marinotti. Lawrence Rubin, father of James and honorary president of the company, started out as an art dealer in the late 50s and was director of the Knoedler gallery in New York for more than twenty years. Among the artists closest to him we should mention Frank Stella, Robert Rauschenberg, Anthony Caro, Howard Hodgkin, Sean Scully, Richard Diebenkorn , and Roy Lichtenstein. Many of the names listed above were also exhibited in Milan with the important additions of Andy Warhol and Eric Fischl. In 2002 the gallery changed its name to Galleria Rubin and the architect Pierre- André Podbielski became partner. Throughout the years the gallery shifted its focus from the leaders of the American art scene to the young Italian artists with the aim of approaching the domestic art world. Initially there was attention for the so-called New Italian Figuration: Pignatelli, Guaitamacchi, Frangi, Fornasieri. Subsequently came photography (Raffaela Mariniello) and abstract and minimalist painting (Tarasewicz, Iacchetti, Shanahan). At present the gallery has a very eclectic program encompassing the most diverse trends and nationalities. In October 2003 the gallery moved from the original address in via Marco de Marchi to new premises in via Bonvesin de la Riva. The new space ads to the regular exhibiting area a project room called -news which is linked to a non profit association, with the aim of enabling young artists to produce as well as exhibit their art works . It is directed by Paolo Galli. Since its foundation the Rubin Gallery has participated in several contemporary art fairs: Art Basel, Miart, Art Frankfurt, Art Cologne and Artefiera in Bologna.
